What is it really like working in finance for a start-up?

Here's what we found...

There's a new generation of finance professionals that values variety, impact and fulfilment more than job stability and pay. They're facing new, complex financial challenges but aren't getting the support they need from the traditional accountancy profession.

Working in start-ups is a lot of fun

85% of our respondents had worked with either large corporates or SMEs first, before moving into start-ups. Their responses show that they are overwhelmingly happier after making the switch.

Building systems that scale is tough

The biggest challenges for those in start-ups finance are tackling inefficient systems and dealing with the pains of growing fast. The desire for skills in developing systems outweigh those for tax and accounting theory: 3 to 1.

Formal training is letting them down

Formal accounting training provides great theoretical knowledge but no practical experience. Data analytics and coding are among the biggest gaps left by the old-school training regimes.
